What is LASER?

Long form of LASER is ‘light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation.’

This intense light beam of bright light travels in one direction. Every type has precise and selective wavelength. LASER beam is monochromatic (has single wave length) collimated (very low diveregence) and coherent (i.e. its all light waves are in same wave at particular point and time). So, these can be used for specific treatments. Thus, LASERs act selectively. The light of routine bulb has many colours, multiple wavelengths and scattered. So, routine light is not effective.

These Laser waves are absorbed by certain substances which are called as chromophore. haemoglobin, melanin & water are chromophore in the body. So, laser waves selectively act only on the cells which contain these chromophores. Laser waves do not act on other cells.

Thus, Lasers are the target specific & precise in action.

When laser waves are absorbed, target cells respond by photochemical, photothermal & photomechanical action. Each laser wave has specific wavelength. Lasers are increasingly used for mild, minor surgical procedures and also for aggressive surgical procedures because these produce high quality results. Healing is fast.

We can see the light having wave length between 400 to 700 nm. Ultraviolet light has less than 400 wavelength and infrared rays have more than 700 wave length. Laser light has brightest i.e. high power density capability.

Lasers have an ability to blast away or diminish imperfections or growth with a minimum bleeding, bruising and scarring. Lasers are of varieties. CO2 Laser

CO2 Laser – CO2 laser iis called work horse of Lasers. In focused mode, it cuts the tissue and seals the blood vessels simultaneously. It is surgical or ablative laser. In defocused mode, it vaporizes tissue & subcutaneous collagen is made tight. Many skin growths, warts, moles, naevi, variety of scars, acne scars, sun damage, aging changes, wrinkles can be treated.
